PECTAA syllabus — Grade 5 & Grade 8

How the syllabus is set

PECTAA absorbed the old Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, so the same body now writes the curriculum, approves the textbooks and sets the papers. For Grade 5 and Grade 8 that means the exam is based directly on the prescribed textbooks for the current session — nothing outside the books, and nothing from a different edition.

If your school teaches from the approved textbooks and covers the full year's content, the syllabus is covered. The exam does not test extra material.

Medium of instruction

The paper matches how the subject is taught. An English-medium school sits Mathematics and General Science in English; an Urdu-medium school sits them in Urdu. The English paper is always in English and the Urdu paper always in Urdu, whatever the school's medium. Islamiyat is usually in Urdu.

The paper pattern

Each paper is a single session in the morning and usually mixes:

  • Objective section — multiple-choice questions covering the whole syllabus.
  • Short questions — a few lines each, with some choice.
  • Long / extended questions — essays, problems worked in full, or detailed answers.

The model paper for each subject shows the exact split of marks. Practising with it is the single most useful thing a student can do in the last month.

Using model papers

PECTAA publishes a model paper for every subject. Work through full papers under timed conditions, mark them against the answer key, and spend revision time on the questions that went wrong rather than re-reading everything. Our past papers page has a week-by-week plan.

Syllabus questions

Yes. Grade 5 has five subjects and Grade 8 has six or seven, and the topics are set for each class. Use the 5th class syllabus or the 8th class syllabus for your class.

It matches the medium of instruction. English-medium schools sit science and mathematics in English; Urdu-medium schools sit them in Urdu. Language papers are always in their own language.
